RESEARCH CONTEXT

WHY IS THIS RESEARCH IMPORTANT?

Deaf people are about 8 %
of the population in Canada.

Deaf people are treated
as disabled people.

Deaf people are a small group
with a culture and
a language of their own.

Deaf people encounter
many obstacles
in society
.

For example :

  • they are victims of
    prejudice.
  • the are not treated
    the same as others.
  • they are sometimes
    ignored.

Deaf people are less involved
in society.

Being deaf is often seen
as something negative.

But many deaf people
are proud to be part
of the Deaf community.

Many deaf people are proud of
the Deaf community.

Deaf people are proud to
express themselves in different sign languages.

Many deaf people
only understand sign language.

But often,
information and culture
are only available
in French or English.

The result is that
these people do not have access
to information
and culture.

There is a lot of knowledge
about Deaf cultures
and the way of thinking of deaf people.

There is a lot of knowledge
about the arts among disabled people
and deaf people.

There is a lot of knowledge
about citizenship and the barriers
deaf people face.

But more knowledge needs to be created
about deaf people’s cultural citizenship.

Cultural citizenship,
is about the inclusion of deaf people
in social and cultural activities.

The United Nations Organization
has said: culture is a right.

More knowledge is needed about ways
to provide access to culture
to everyone similarly.

There are good ways
to improve accessibility
for deaf people.

For example :

  • Subtitling makes movies and TV
    shows accessible to deaf people.
  • Sign language
    makes mainstream communication
    and information accessible
    to Deaf people.

There are good ways
to improve equity
for deaf people.

For example :

  • creating job opportunities
    for deaf people.
  • providing opportunities
    for deaf people
to develop new skills in their jobs.
    dans leur emploi.

Accessibility and equity
allow deaf people
to be seen.

Accessibility and equity
allow deaf people
to take part in society

Accessibility and equity
allow for the inclusion
of Deaf culture
into the fabric of society.

Accessibility and equity
enable deaf people
to feel like they are full-fledged citizens.
